Alison’s expressive and elegant style of writing reached out and took me by the hand, inviting me aboard the decks of Lily to explore historical villages and countryside throughout England, Europe and Ireland.

For me personally, as a cruising sailor along the East Coast of Australia, our worlds upon the water offer us vastly different sights and experiences.  I was completely swept up in the beauty and romance of Europe and felt I was there with Alison and her family among the fields and flowers, gliding along historical waterways, aqueducts and ancient locks systems.

Once you have set up the designated toilet area for your sailing dog on your boat, it’s time to let them know that it is ok to use it.  

I would love to be the doggy blogger with the crystal ball foretelling that you will have no problems getting your doggo to go on board, on cue, within a couple of days, perhaps a week maximum. The truth, dare I say it, is that every dog is different.

At best I can only share our experiences which may give you some insight into how you might move forward with your furry sailing buddy’s toilet training.

Introducing Macduff.  He might only be a youngster but Macduff is a well travelled international sailor dog and a highly accomplished Director of Social Activities on his boat.

Of a day I would walk the marina jetties searching for inklings of dogs on boats and of an evening I’d consult Google looking for the best toileting solution for Maxy & Mel.

I have found the most popular onboard doggy toilet used by many boaties to be the mat of synthetic grass (aka fake grass or Astro Turf) of which we refer to as The Doggy Pee Mat.

We are delighted to share with you the bio of Lewis, a long time member of Dogs Who Sail.  Lewis has been sailing the east coast of Australia for the past two years with his parents.  For exercise and entertainment Lewis is an avid ball chaser.  We love Lewis.

Bella the Beautiful!  This little dog has stolen many hearts within our Dogs Who Sail community.  She has a spirited spaniel nature and is a fun loving water baby who not only sails many seas but rides a SUP as well.  A great breed for sailing.
